the gardens
When we arrived at Terrara, neither of us had much gardening experience. What began as a steep learning curve has become one of the great joys of living here — a slow, ongoing education in soil, seasonality, structure, and patience.
Our partnership is written into the gardens themselves. Venetia shapes the overarching designs and plant selections, imagining how each space might feel through the seasons. Jeremy brings those visions into being through his craftsmanship, most clearly expressed in the drystone walls that have become idiosyncratic to Terrara.
These walls trace the contours of the land: the retaining walls that frame the front entrance, the curving wall of the Reflection Room, the rounded stone steps that fall away from the Dining Room. Each one highlights the topography, creating distinct moments while still allowing the eye to rest and take in the whole.
The gardens continue to evolve with us — a collaboration between design and making, intuition and skill, and the quiet lessons offered by the landscape itself.
