a return
Returning to the beauty of this land we had envisaged a reimagining of some aspects of our lives. Circumstances meant that for Venetia this was much sooner and more abrupt than originally anticipated. Issues of mental health are still something that we tend to shy away from revealing even when they have such profound impacts on our daily lives and those who love us. A return to ceramics after a long time away from clay and the establishment of the Terrara Estate Studio in 2025 has been such a positive outcome from these challenges.

style and inspiration
My work is hand-built. I do not use a wheel, preferring to take a more tactile and less processes driven approach. I find this provides me with greater opportunity to reflect and connect with the natural beauty of our bush surroundings in my work.
My work is organic in nature. I strive to embrace the perfection of imperfection. Not only in the asymmetrical shapes of my work but also in my decorative style; brushstrokes are celebrated and the fluidity when I make them is felt within the final pieces. The varying thicknesses of functional pieces where I don’t shy away from making visible the simple tools I use to make my pieces is another element that makes my work feel of nature.
My decorative style is abstract and fluid, using the clay as a canvas for my designs which are influenced by the landscape. Undulating hills, flowing rivers, towering trees, scrubby bush, birds and the seasons all contribute to the elemental nature of my work.
I specialise in mid-fire functional pieces with a focus on the use of underglazes for decoration and overglazes for functionality. I utilise clays that have pieces of iron within them which when fired become visible as speckles within the vitrified clay. I leave areas of raw clay exposed, making the interplay between the decorated elements and the natural material found within each piece.
